If you are curious who sings the song “learning to live” on the opening of the Jillian Michaels show “Losing it,” the answer is Beth Hart.
Beth is from California and has been playing the piano since she was 4. When she was 5 years old, her father was convicted of drug dealing and sentenced to prison. After his release, Beth’s parents divorced after 15 years of marriage. At the age of 11 years old, Beth herself started to use alcohol and drugs and when she was 15 years old, her boyfriend introduced her to heroin.
In 1993 she won 13 episodes of Star Search in a row, singing the music of Janis Joplin, Melissa Etheridge and Aretha Franklin, as well as songs she had written herself, including ‘Show Me the Way’ and ‘I Am the One’. Eventually she won the final Star Search competition.
She has battled her drugs and alcohol, and at one point had a weight gain of 108 lbs. She eventually went to rehab, married her manager, lost the weight, and has been writing and recording music.
Leave it to Jillian to not only find a great song, but to find a song with a great inspiriational story behind it. For more information go to www.bethhart.com
Finding the single is a bit tough (which is why I put links to Amazon and iTunes here).
Lyrics to Learning to Live
I keep my head on straight
And my eyes wide open
I try to move forward
Wishing and hoping
I took a hold of myself
In the middle of November
Don’t you look back now
Is all I can remember
I feel like I’m leaving
Like I’m leaving home
Like the clouds are parting
And I’m not alone
I’m learning to live living to learn
Starting to sing my song right or wrong
Breaking away setting me free
Free to be my own me
I’m learning to live
I got my vanity crisis
From my beautiful mother
I’m not gonna go there
I’m anything other
Take another deep breath now
It’s just one more hurdle
I’m breaking this line
Before it comes full circle
I feel like I’m leaving
Like I’m leaving home
Like the clouds are parting
And I’m not alone
I’m learning to live living to learn
Starting to sing my song right or wrong
Breaking away setting me free
Free to be my own me
I’m learning to live
I found a place where I can lay my shit down
Somewhere that I can finally be myself
Be myself
I’m learning to live living to learn
Starting to sing my song right or wrong
Breaking away setting me free
Free to be my own me
I’m learning to live

As soon has the opening begins, I was totally drawn in & loving the voice. I am such a Jillian Michaels fan, I believe she has some influence in choicing the song for show, I applaud the choice. All the words apply to what my own life journey has been like for the past 3 yrs for me. Thanxs again and hope to hear more for you, Ms. Hart.
